Organizing a Storage Shed So It Stays Organized

A planning guide from the Olivandro Co. build crew.

A new shed is organized for about six weeks. Making it last is a design problem, not a discipline problem.

Get everything off the floor

Wall-mounted French cleats, pegboard and open shelving beat plastic drawer units. If the floor is clear, sweeping stays easy and the space keeps working.

Zone by frequency

Daily-use tools within arm's reach of the door. Seasonal items on high shelves or in a loft. Chemicals in one labeled, ventilated corner away from anything flammable.

Build a loft

A 4-foot loft above the door wall in an 8-foot-wall building adds huge dead-storage volume for almost no cost.

Leave a staging square

Keep a clear 3x3 area near the door for loading and unloading. Without it, everything gets set down in the aisle.
